This is just a quick update on what we are up to at Musicians Blueprint. We’ve been so busy lately we haven’t had a chance to breath much less do anything else. As many of you know we recently teamed up with a gentleman by the name of Jerry Wyatt. Originally we were just looking for a quality guitar course to endorse, but what we found in Jerry was so much more. When we opened the doors to the Learn Guitar Fast and Easy course just a couple of weeks ago we didn’t know what to expect. What we got has been overwhelming to say the least. There are Major and Minor scales that are similar in every way other than that they are played in different positions on the neck. These scales consist of 5 notes as opposed to most other scales which are 7 notes or better. This is extremely useful for the beginner in order to avoid “The Twisted Finger Syndrome”

The easiest way to master Pentatonic Licks is to envision the shapes that are made up of the position of your fingers. Once you know the shapes then it is as simple as knowing what notes and positions to begin and end on within the scale you’re playing.

There are also 5 positions within the scale. Are you noticing a pattern here? The Pentatonic is all based on 5’s (hence the root penta)

The pentatonic scale follows the root chord in a progression. The root is basically the tonal center of a song where everything begins and ends. If the root chord is minor, then you can play the same minor pentatonic scale over that progression. If the root chord is major, then you can play the same major pentatonic scale over that progression.

As a Players you should just play up and down a pattern in one position and then move up the guitar neck to the next. Then start again and play up and down the new pattern in the new position. At this stage of the game you’re just trying to train yourself to access the scale notes in any position and determine where you are on the fretboard. After you get this down you will be able to play all five pentatonic scale patterns ascending and descending and you can transpose to new keys and practice connecting the patterns again.

If you practice this stuff it will become easier each and every time. It’s easier than you might think. Your guitar playing can progress almost exponentially with the simple understanding of this scale. It is helpful to get some tracks you can play along with. I suggest that you look for tracks of your favorite guitar licks… You can bet your bottom dollar that the riffs you’ve been drooling over for years are based upon the Pentatonic.
