Electric guitar?

I’m thinking about learning electric guitar. But I’m not sure if i should do acoustic or classical guitar instead. I mainly want to play rock music. So should i stay with electric or what? Also what brand is a good brand or what kind of a electric guitar should I look for. beginner?!? thanks

It is best to learn with an acoustic – that is more difficult to play so its best to learn it right from the start. There are many good brands of electric and acoustic to choose from but if you are just starting out I recommend a generic type – like the ones at wal-mart or the no-name brands on ebay. To begin I would not pay more than $100 for a new acoustic and I would not pay more than $125 for an electric w/small amp + cord. Good luck.Array

Well, if I were you, I would look on Amazon. You can find great guitars such as Gibsons which are great for all levels of playing. Many great guitar wonders, started by playing classical music. Because it sounds easy, but in reality it’s very hard! So I would (and am myself) starting with classical music. Then, go ahead with rock, because trust me, it will be sooo easy!

If you want to play rock, then definitely eliminate the classical from your list, wrong tone for what you want. An acoustic is a good place to start, you can sit and play without plugging in to anything, great for learning chord changes and doing those banging chord rhythm parts. You’ll find that the action is tougher, so lead lines and some chords will be more difficult. This is good and bad. Bad because it’s a pain as a beginner and can lead to frustration, good because when you switch to an electric the action will be a breeze to play on.

Obviously if you want to play rock, an electric is always a good choice. But that means extra investment with electronics, chords, etc. They play easier, so learning is a little smoother, although eventually you need to be able to handle the tougher action of an acoustic. As far as brands go that won’t break you, Fender has a full price gamut, the bottom end is pretty cheap, but still better than a knock-off. Gibson’s inexpensive brand is Epiphone. Schecter makes some nice instruments, better than low end Fenders and Epi’s, but a bump in price. I’ve always like Ibanez myself and still play on one. This all holds true for both electrics and acoustics, except I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Schecter acoustic.

If you like rock I suggest learning blues and rock on an electric guitar.

You get a better education by starting with classical, but you’re much more likely to get bored and give up if you’re not playing music you like, and you won’t get very good that way.

As far as electric guitars go, you gotta get a Fender Squier, or a Gibson Epiphone. Squiers and Epiphones are remakes of some of the greatest Gibson and Fenders, except they use less valuable parts and the actual production (making/crafting) of the guitar is outsourced as appossed to made by the artists here in the US. So they’re way less expensive and range from 200-400$, while Gibsons range from 900-2000, and Fenders 700-2000.

I myself use a Squier Jaguar (named Alice) and a Epiphone SG (named Becca).

    Good luck

If you are going to be playing rock, then you should definitely start right with the electrics. The technique for playing acoustic is different than that for playing electric. Generally, being that the electric is amplified, you would use a lighter attack. There are a wide assortment of inexpensive, yet very playable electrics on the market. Epiphones are excellent (with the exceptions being the very cheapest models). I’m not fond of the Fender Squiers. You can get a decent Mexican Fender for about the same price and if it is set up properly it will be a better guitar than a Squier. You also might want to look at Dean guitars. Dean puts out an excellent array of guitars that are better than the Epiphones and Squiers in both sound a playability. I would suggest that you do a bit of shopping at local music stores to see what the price ranges are for used guitars, then compare that with the prices on Musiciansfriend.com for new ones. Here are some sites for you to take a look at.

Acoustic is better to start with, because it’s harder, but at the same time electric is better to start with for the same reason. I gaurantee though that it feels better to learn on acoustic and switch over to electric (it feels so easy and natural) than the other way around.

I would suggest Fender as a good starting brand for an electric guitar. Try a Mexican made Stratocaster or Telecaster.

As far as acoustic, I’m not too sure. I know Ibanez has some decent and decently priced acoustic guitars, but if you want an acoustic that sounds nice, you need to pay a lot.

    Hi,
Iam a begginer too and ive just got my first guitar – electric.
Ive heard they are easier to play because you just strum it instead on fingerpick different notes. Also for rock music u need a electric – u dont want to but a classical then have to get a electric. I think Bass would be a good option for you. They are simalar to electric but have a deeper sound and only have 4 strings making it easier to play.
Or you could have a electro-acoustic which is a cross between electric and classical guitars!
Encore is a good brand for electric guitar and you can get starter packs for £99 which is about $110 with amp, case, guitar, pledrums, stand and some other things. You dont have to plug ur guitar in to play.
